Why am I here?
Difficult seasons in our life can bring the deepest questions in our hear to the forefront of our thoughts. A close friend of mine foundherself in an extremely difficult situation. She lost her job, and since then felt her world has slowly imploding. She lost hope and questioned why she should continue living. "What’s the point? What’s the purpose? Why am I here?", she asked.
It’s a question most of us have thought about. One that many experts have sought to answer through both spiritual and scientific methods. It’s one that I have personally wrestled with in one of the darkest season’s of my life. Very similar to that of my friend.
I believe this question has been pondered since the creation of mankind, because we all have a deep yearning inside us to search for a higher purpose in life. It doesn’t surprise me, that the author Rick Warren’s book, “What on earth am I here for” went on to sell more than 40 million copies and has been translated into hundreds of languages. The reason why it attracted such a massive audience is because deep inside, many of us feel incomplete. We feel a void deep in our hearts and in our spirit, that cannot be filled by human endeavors. Many of us have tried to do so without success. These attempts can be in the form of careers, relationships with people, materialistic possessions like cars, homes, jewelry, and in some instances even drugs and alcohol.
“I denied myself nothing my eyes desire; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward of my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
We Were Created for Relationship
The deep yearning inside of us, is our spirit’s desire to get closer to its source. Our father deposited a spirit inside each and every one of us. Picture that spirit as a dim flashing light at the center of your being that flashes brighter and brighter as you get closer to the source, our creator. Like a homing device that begins to beep as you get closer to finding it, your light becomes brighter and begins to fill the void in your heart.
We were created to be in relationship with our father in heaven. We were meant to be in a relationship with God. I know that may sound weird to you, especially if you are a non-believer or not very familiar with religion. But the truth is, there is a God and the reason why many of us feel incomplete is because we have not taken the time to build a relationship with him. Acts 17:28 states, “ For in him we live and move and have our being…We are his off spring.”
We were created in the image of God, which includes both the physical body and mind. And that which, he helped create our father in heaven will support. From the very beginning he has created us, and provided an environment for us to thrive in. Now we may not be in the best situations at times, but he knows that and is here to support us. Is only through him that we can lead loving and fulfilling lives. It doesn’t take a huge step or sacrifice on your behalf. The father that made you knows you already. All you have to do is turn towards him with a willing heart and get to know him. He will take care of the rest.
